Oblique strategies packaging
The way out might be through dissolution. To get out of a tailspin you turn into it.
TL;DR:
This was an experiment in the creative process.
I used the philosophies of Oblique Strategies to design their packaging. Oblique Strategies is a card series created by Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt.
Concepting
Oblique as being non-explicit led me to obfuscation and layers with abstraction.
An acid-drenched photo yielded as the key inspiration for proceeding.
Ideating
The visual materials were typographic studies of the words 'oblique' and 'strategies.'
I explored a spectrum of composition, storytelling, and aesthetic. I express the spirit of each typeface in the study. My intent revealed the beauty of the unexpected.
Wrecking it
I transferred each of the digital studies onto tracing paper. Then a small band of friends and I got to work mangling, shredding, torching, contorting, and otherwise wrecking the studies in imaginative ways.
Prototyping
I chose fourteen photos which illustrated the concept and arrested a viewer's gaze to build prototypes around.
Feedback
"These are beautiful. What do you do with them?"
I took the boxes around to my compatriots. I asked what they understood this thing to be and which design was the most appealing.
Production
I had a sample made from a company that mass produced playing cards.
Shipt 🛶
The sample sits on a shelf.
At an oblique angle.
